Painting for me is a journey in personal expression, something beautiful often challenging, but always joyful.
I started painting in 2004 after a long career in business. I consider myself self-taught but studied with an amazing group of professional artists and teachers in the early years. My first passion was to become a painter of landscapes and I emersed myself in the challenge. I spent years at the easel. There were galleries and painting sales. Painting was great!
In 2015 I developed an interest in figurative abstraction. I studied the works of current and former artists in the field. This painting style was quite different. I felt like a musician who could play music but just changed instruments. Gone were the rules and reference photos. I knew how to paint but everything about approach and process was different. But I had found abstraction, and I loved it! This was storytelling with color and paint. Like other figurative abstractionists in this space, I was interested in the emotion of the figure. I was captured by the story telling of part of this art and the back-and-forth conversation taking place between myself and my composition. These works come to life as a part of the artist. Impossible to duplicate. They are truly unique.
When I started painting, I wasn't sure why I wanted to paint. But now I had found my muse. It had all been for Abstraction.
Today, I remain active with both landscape and abstracted figurative works. My next adventure will be abstracted landscapes.
